Bursary FAQ
Bowls England Coaching Bursary
Frequently Asked Questions (April 2018)
What is the Bowls England Coaching Bursary Scheme?
Bowls England recognises that the provision of coaching to all players at all levels, but particularly new bowlers within our clubs, is vital to the long‐term development of the sport of bowls. The Bowls England Coaching Bursary offers financial assistance to members of affiliated clubs who wish to obtain a Coach Bowls qualification.
What is Coach Bowls?
Coach Bowls is the comprehensive coaching system developed by Bowls England and the English Indoor Bowling Association Ltd (EIBA Ltd) to meet the needs of players and coaches at all levels. Coach Bowls is the only bowls coaching system supported and funded by the two National Governing Bodies (NGBs).
Can I apply?
Any individual affiliated member of Bowls England may apply for financial assistance for up to 50 per cent of the cost of the course. Applicants must be at least 17 years old and meet the requirements for attendance on a Coach Bowls course.
How do I apply?
All applicants must complete the Bowls England Coaching Bursary Application Form, which must be approved by your Club Secretary. The completed form must then be sent to your County Administrator/Secretary who will, if approved, forward the application to Bowls England for consideration. Please note the County Administrator/Secretary must be that of the County Association affiliated to Bowls England and not the County Coaching Coordinator or similar appointee.
What is the approval process?
Applications for funding will be considered by the Bowls England Awarding Panel quarterly. The decision of the awarding panel on all applications will be final and no correspondence will be entered into. All applicants will be informed of the awarding panel’s decision.
How will payment of bursary be made?
Bowls England will pay 50 per cent of the relevant course fee for successful applicants. Payment will be made directly to the person/club that paid the course fee following receipt of confirmation from the course organiser that the course has been successfully completed.
Are there any limitations?
Two applications per affiliated club will be supported in any two‐year period.
Is any additional funding available from other sources?
All applicants are encouraged to contact their County Sport Partnership (CSP) for details on additional funding that may be available to cover the cost of the course, either in full or in part. Contact details for your CSP are available on the Bowls England website.
I am not a member of a club affiliated to Bowls England?
Individuals who only coach indoors should apply for support through the EIBA Ltd. However, Bowls England may consider an application from an EIBA Ltd Member if the applicant can provide evidence that they coach regularly at outdoor clubs affiliated to Bowls England.
